After Helen and I moved to Matakana one of the first bird calls we heard came from the Kaka. They have a very distinct call which you can hear in the soundtrack of the short video below.
One morning they had bolstered their numbers on our semi-rural property to about six or seven and seemed to be ganging up on the Magpies trying to move them out of the area. They were making a hell of a racket . We were told the Kakas were flying over to the mainland from Little Barrier .
We were so intrigued with these snubbed headed birds that I decided to do a painting of one . I have attached a small sequence of my drawing process for your entertainment and also the finished painting.
By the way we don’t see many Magpies around the place but we do see a lot of Kakas

Being quite new to the local community, I have been looking for opportunities to get more involved and so, I'm collaborating with other artists to help raise funds for Hospice.
I'd like to take this opportunity to tell you what has been going on and to answer some of your questions...
